A comprehensive mental health center for highest needs adolescents
Star View Adolescent Center in Torrance serves California’s highest needs adolescents. It is a comprehensive mental health treatment program for young people with severe emotional challenges who cannot be treated effectively in other existing community-based intensive treatment programs. Star View’s multilevel program combines high-quality residential care and educational services with mental health treatment and rehabilitation. Unique in California, our integrated program eliminates the need to admit children in acute psychiatric crisis to a hospital where they are unknown and very well might not be able to resume their residential placement.
Developed in 1996 conjunction with Los Angeles County, Star View Adolescent Center treats children who have experienced severe complex trauma, or children with serious emotional challenges requiring intensive services in a secured environment. The center has 60 beds for those between the ages of 12 and 17 years. In addition to serving Los Angeles County youth, Star View Adolescent Center serves youth from across the state through contracts with multiple counties.
Highly individualized, innovative, and flexible, our approach gives adolescents every opportunity to succeed. Our staff actively encourages family and foster family participation in treatment. We also provide a range of services to help youngsters when they transition to community living. Star View effectively uses Evidence-Based Practices (EBPs) for interventions and supports.

Programs & Services
Psychiatric Health Facility (PHF)
A 16-bed acute psychiatric hospital that is licensed by the California Department of Mental Health. The PHF provides comprehensive psychiatric and physical assessment, evaluation, and treatment in a safe and secure setting. The PHF functions as a cost-effective alternative to repeated acute inpatient services or state hospitalization by stabilizing the youngsters and preparing them for transition to a lower level of care.
Community Treatment Facility (CTF)
A safe locked environment providing supportive needs-driven services to as many as 44 youngsters. The CTF therapeutic programs prepare youngsters for lasting reintegration into their families and the community.
Day Treatment Intensive Program (DTI)
Therapeutic groups and services are offered seven days a week. Our DTI program is designed to develop and foster the skills that youth need for successful functioning in family or outpatient settings.
Community Services Program
Support for youngsters transitioning from the Adolescent Center to community living (group homes, foster families, kinship care, or family reunification). Community Services staff collaborate with teachers, principals, and other school personnel to achieve goals established by the student, family, and treatment professionals. In-home counseling services help youngsters thrive in their new school and family or other community living environment.
South Bay High School
Innovative, nonpublic school (NPS) where credentialed instructors experienced with emotionally disturbed youth develop Individual Education Plans. By integrating comprehensive therapeutic services into an academic curriculum, our NPS helps adolescents to maintain and advance their educational status while receiving mental health care. Many South Bay High School students pass the same standardized California high school exit exams in English and Math that are administered by public schools throughout the state.
